I've been working like a mad man getting ready for the new school year. My goal is to finish all major projects one week before we get back in session. Can it be done? We'll see!
Here is my quick Monday Made it post to share some of the things I have been working on.
My Classroom
Here are a few snapshots of my classroom. This is the first year I will departmentalized and will be teaching ELA and Social Studies. I'm working on making my classroom more subject focused. I put up my C.R.A.F.T. and V.O.I.C.E.S. boards and think they look sweet! A huge thank you to Ladybug's Teacher Files for providing the labels I used on my boards. My first real major beast to attack in the classroom is my library! (more on that when I finish).
Drawer Organization
I've been wanting to make one of these drawer units for a while now and I finally did! I used the blank labels provided by The Tattooed Teacher with this post. Click on the link and she has all the steps and labels you need to get yourself organized.
Daily 5 Posters
This year I'm using the Daily 5/C.A.F.E. structure for my reading instruction for the first time. I will be blogging a lot more about that soon because I would like some feedback once my plan is finalized. I went ahead and started making my posters for the daily stations using these hipster monsters. Who doesn't love a monster in glasses?
Photo Album Task Cards
Finally, I wanted to share this awesome idea that I saw on FB from Rachel at Minds in Bloom. I used $1 photo albums (purchased at Wal-Mart) to store all of my station task cards. No laminating needed! Now students can flip through the task cards and get to practicing!

ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! I just ordered "Teach Like a Pirate", so I'll have to check back with you once you get your room done. I also have a lofty goal as far as completing my classroom and having the first 3 weeks of school "mapped" by July 31st!
The one thing that is going to take me forever...my library. I was wondering if you would share insight on how you are setting up yours. I found an app that I think I may use to manage it, and I'm about 90% sure I'm going to group by genre. LOTS to do. I hope to have completed classroom pictures up in a few weeks.

DeleteI am using an app named Book Crawler and it costs $1.99 but it's awesome. I just scan the UPC on the book, it finds the book, and it has a section for notes. In that section I am typing the genre bin # and key words. So when a student is looking for a specific book or I need one for a lesson, the app has a search option so I can easily locate it. It's a tedious task but I will be so happy once I have it.
Which app are you using?
I am also organizing my library by genre and using Scholastic Book Wizard to help me categorize the books. I've labeled my bins by genre, gave each genre bin a number, and used Avery mailing labels to put inside the books.
I created the labels with my name and a blank colored square on the right hand side of the label. Then I just stick the label inside the book and write the bin number on the colored square. So far, its working well. *fingers crossed* haha

DeleteYour classroom is lookin' fabulous!!! You might be the coolest male teacher ever! I love your monster Daily 5 posters. You will love the Daily 5! I used it with my 2nd graders last year and was simply amazed at their independence, willingness to work hard and push themselves, and their love for reading! I went to the CAFE conference this past June and am just still not quite sure about that piece. I tried it off and on this past year and it was just.. really, really challenging to let go of reading groups! I can't wait to see your finished room!

I live for your classroom! It looks great - colorful, interesting, but not overpowering. I dig it. :) I'm working on my library, too...but I started just staring so I left it for the day. I haven't decided whether to level the books or not, because I don't want to discourage kids, but I also don't need my level D kids hauling around Harry Potter for goodness sakes! You will love, love, love Daily 5...I wish I had known about it when I taught 3rd and 5th! Happy classroom setting up!
